Module 14: PCS Skids; What They Are, How They Interface, What to Inspect
The Power Conversion System is where the battery’s DC world and the grid’s AC world meet. Everything on the battery side — cells, BMS, DC bus — terminates at the PCS. Everything on the grid side — MV transformer, switchgear, interconnection — starts at the PCS. If there is a scope gap on a BESS project, it is most likely at or near the PCS, because it is the interface point between the battery vendor’s scope, the BOP contractor’s scope, and the grid operator’s requirements. Understanding what the PCS is, how it interfaces with the systems on either side, and what to inspect during installation and pre-commissioning is essential for field and CM roles on a BESS project.
